Great question! To answer it, I highly recommend that you consider three more detailed questions. We can then discuss these in an initial phone call to determine if you are ready for an in-person consultation with Holly Witten designs!

What Do I Hope to Accomplish?

You want to create or update a space and maybe you’re unsure about how to do it or how to make it happen. That’s OK. What is important is that you are able to clearly state what you are trying to accomplish when having an initial call with a designer. What do you have in mind for the space?  What about the space is not working now?  How will the space(s) be used? Is this a home you are staying in for a while? What is the scope of the project – are things like flooring, painting, window treatments and lighting part of the project? These are important to convey in our initial call and will be discussed in further detail if we decide to set up an in-person consultation.

What’s My Rough Budget for the Project?

Whether or not you have a preliminary budget in mind, it is important to be prepared to have a conversation about budget during an initial call with a designer.  If a potential client’s budget thoughts are unrealistic, I will provide feedback, in general terms, to see if we can figure out an appropriate ballpark budget to suit the project.  From there, as part of the HWd in-person consultation, I work with you to develop a more detailed budget framework that outlines estimates for furnishings, accessories and design time. (Note: I do not provide budget estimates for contractors or other disciplines.)

How Does the Design Process Work?

Sometimes people are hesitant to engage a designer because they don’t know how the whole process works from the first consultation to the final, finished space. I explain the process during our initial call and then in more detail at our consultation, so that you understand well the order of process – including realistic project timeline and budget, creation of design ideas, selection and ordering, handling of unforeseen issues), delivery of items, final details and any unforeseen issues (delays, discontinued items, etc.).  I’ll make sure you are comfortable and have a clear sense of the process before we begin!
